AI in Texas

Texas enacted the Texas Responsible Artificial Intelligence Governance Act (TRAIGA, HB 149) in 2025, effective January 1, 2026; it bars certain harmful AI uses, creates a DIR-run regulatory sandbox and a Texas AI Council, and gives the attorney general exclusive enforcement authority. The Department of Information Resources (DIR) runs an AI and Innovation program with required public-sector AI awareness training, an AI User Group and a Public Sector AI Sandbox created under SB 1964 (89R). An earlier AI Advisory Council, created by HB 2060 in 2023, studied state agency AI use and reported to the Legislature by December 2024.
