Governor Wes Moore signed an executive order in January 2024 on the responsible and productive use of AI in Maryland state government, and the AI Governance Act of 2024 (SB 818) took effect in July 2024. On January 14, 2025, the Department of Information Technology and the Maryland AI Subcabinet submitted the 2025 AI Enablement Strategy and AI Study Roadmap to the General Assembly, covering governance, data foundations, pilots, workforce AI literacy and studies in twelve domains. In May 2026 the Artificial Intelligence Ready Schools Act (SB 720, Chapter 634) was approved, directing the State Department of Education to provide AI guidance and tool-evaluation resources and to create a Maryland AI Education Collaborative.
