In August 2023 Governor Laura Kelly directed Executive Branch agencies to adopt a statewide generative AI policy (OITS Policy 8200, effective July 31, 2023), which requires human review of AI outputs and bars entering state or restricted-use information into generative AI tools. A 2025 state CISO policy also prohibits designated AI platforms, including DeepSeek, on state devices and networks. A 2026 bill to create a Kansas task force on artificial intelligence and emerging technologies (HB 2592) was heard in committee in February 2026 but died.
